Discovered in 2017 through the track Plan$ recorded alongside rappers Flawless & Joe Rocca, Tyleen quickly attracts attention within the Montreal rap scene. Originally from the LaSalle neighbourhood, the young rapper has been carving out her place in the local English rap community, where women are still under-represented.
Tyleen got signed to Make It Rain in 2018 with her raw rap, in tune with the aesthetics of today’s gangsta rap. She draws inspiration from the lineage of female MCs who paved the way in rap music, from Lil Kim, Foxy Brown and Missy Elliott to contemporary artists such as Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B.
In 2019, the young rapper multiplies live appearances and performs at several concerts and hip-hop events in Montreal such as LVL UP sharing the stage with Tizzo, OUMF, M for Montreal, and was chosen as the ambassador to the cannabis legalization party, organized by none other than VICE.
Uninhibited and aware of her seductive power, Tyleen pioneers a new, crucial era for female rap in Quebec. The young diva does not hesitate to shamelessly detail stories around violence, drugs, and the sex industry, unapologetically appropriating the codes of street culture similarly to her male counterparts.
Behind her deep, laid-back and autotuned voice, her lyrics are a declaration of independence, an ode to individuality, a confident and unpretentious feminist message. Throughout the years, the one who’s been compared to Cardi B has been developing her own style, supported by her sexy, assertive and unique allure.
Although Quebec hip-hop has long marginalized female contributors, Tyleen has never seen the rap industry as a ‘boys club’. At just 20 years old, Tyleen is fearless and her first opus is far from timid.
